Continuous professional development of university professors

Nowadays, the development of higher education is connected with the transition to a new educational paradigm aimed at creating a system of continuous professional development. The introduction of the principle of “lifelong learning”, proclaimed basic in the European and national educational space, and quality assurance of educational activities have become decisive in the activities of the university.

Among the units providing professional growth of scientific and pedagogical workers, since 2016 there is a Scientific and Methodological Center for Professional Development of Teachers of the Uman State Pedagogical University named after Pavel Tychyna (Director – Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Management) Kobernik O.M.). The activity of the Scientific and Methodological Center is aimed at creating a system of continuous professional development of university professors; organization of systematic scientific and methodological activity aimed at the development of scientific creativity, professionalism and professional competence of scientific-pedagogical and administrative-managerial staff; organization of permanent scientific and methodological seminars for different categories of university employees; conducting research in the field of higher education; publication of scientific and methodological recommendations and manuals on improvement of educational process in ZVO, etc.

There are three sectors within the structure of the Scientific and Methodological Center: “School of Professional Growth of Young Teacher” (Head of Candidate of Science, Associate Professor Nadiya Stetsenko), “School of Professional Skill of Teachers” (Head of Doctoral Science, Associate Professor Oksana Bialik) and “School of Management Competence and Leadership Potential of Chair Managers” (Head of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Olena Kirdan).

The “School of Professional Growth of Young Teacher” provides effective assistance to young teachers in adapting to the conditions of work at the university, promotes the development of their general and professional competences, improving pedagogical skills. A number of topical issues were discussed at the meetings of the scientific-methodological seminar and training sessions, namely: new requirements for the defense of dissertation research, elimination of obstacles of personality and educational development of the individual, methods of organizing and conducting lectures and seminars, use of cloud technologies in education and training high school teacher and others.

The activity of the School of Professional Skills of Teachers is aimed at developing the teaching skills of university teachers, expanding knowledge and forming professional competencies in the regulatory and legislative support of the educational process, internal system of quality assurance of educational activity, pedagogy and psychology of higher education.

At the meetings of the School of Management Competence and Leadership Potential of Chairmen of Departments, a systematic training of heads of departments was organized on a number of topical issues, namely: compliance with the requirements of the legislation on higher education; preparation for accreditation of educational programs; mechanisms for assessing the quality of higher education students’ learning outcomes; peculiarities of scientific and pedagogical staff training; development of leadership potential and emotional intelligence of the head of the department, etc.

Perspective directions of further activity of the Scientific and Methodological Center for the Professional Development of Teachers of the Uman State Pedagogical University named after Pavel Tychyna are the initiation of seminars, coaches and trainings for the scientific and pedagogical workers of the regional educational establishments, structuring of the normative and legal support for the development of teaching staff.
